Personal Info

Since April 2012, Lorraine Waller has been working as a Post-doctoral Research Officer within the department. With Erzsebet Bukodi and John Goldthorpe, she is working on a three-year ESRC funded project, which seeks to explore the role of education in intergenerational social mobility across cohorts in Great Britain. She was previously employed within the department from April 2011-March 2012 as a Research Assistant in Population Studies, working with Sylvie Dubuc on a John-Fell OUP funded project which examined the links between educational attainment and fertility patterns for minority ethnic and second generation groups in the United Kingdom.

Lorraine obtained a PhD in Social Statistics from the University of Southampton in 2011.  Her doctoral thesis analysed relationships between international migration and family formation for recent migrants to the United Kingdom from South Asian and ‘A8’ countries. Whilst completing her PhD studies, Lorraine worked as a Research Assistant for the University of St Andrews on their ‘Child Health and Migrant Parents in South East Asia’ (CHAMPSEA) project, and also as a teaching and marking assistant within the Division of Social Statistics at the University of Southampton. Prior to her PhD, she completed a BSc in Applied Social Sciences in 2006, and an MSc in Social Statistics (Research Methods) in 2007, at the University of Southampton.

Lorraine’s research interests cross the fields of sociology, demography and social statistics. These include: educational inequality; social mobility; longitudinal data analysis and the life-course perspective; low fertility and family formation patterns in developed countries; immigration and integration processes.
