Department of Social Policy and Social Work

University of Oxford

Prospective Graduate Students

Students from all over the world are attracted to Oxford because of its outstanding international reputation and its distinct learning culture and environment. Students in our department have the opportunity to attend a variety of lectures and seminars and are also allocated a personal academic supervisor who guides and supports them in their intellectual development. As well as becoming a member of an academic department, like the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, students also become a member of a college. College life is a central part of the 'Oxford experience' and provides students with a supportive base to meet with and learn from scholars and other students.

Each year, the Department of Social Policy and Intervention welcomes a number of new graduate students from a wide range of countries and cultures. It is this diversity that makes the Department so vibrant and we pride ourselves on the stimulating and supportive atmosphere that we have worked hard to create.

From Singapore and I'm part of an international and vibrant EBSI 2011-2012 cohort. I studied Social Work at the National University of Singapore and joined the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) after graduation. I worked briefly with drug addicts before working with young offenders for about three years. Before I came to Oxford, I led a small team in charge of programme evaluation activities in the SPS. My interest lies primarily in mental health issues, informed by a fruitful internship at the Institute of Mental Health in Singapore. My motivation for pursuing this course is to equip myself with the skills required in rigorous research and evaluation, which I require for my work when I return to the SPS. The part of my course I am enjoying the most thus far is the plethora of views and perspectives, put forth by lecturers and classmates alike, which has broadened my thinking. Outside of class, I have started playing football with my college (Green Templeton) and hope to win us some matches!

MSc Student (Evidence Based Social Intervention)

Prior to joining DSPI, I was a research assistant at a laboratory that specialises in developing and evaluating psychosocial interventions for young adult alcohol abuse and misuse.   I decided to pursue a degree in Social Intervention due to a love of research and a desire to help make the world a better place. My educational background is rooted in social justice and improving the wellbeing of the more vulnerable members of society. In addition, I have been raised to find a vocation where skills and passions overlap with “the community’s” greatest needs. As there are significant gaps between scientific knowledge of social problems and how they are addressed, I decided to pursue a degree in Social Intervention to work to narrow these gaps.  I most enjoy the people. Every year brings a new cohort of bright minds, from different cultures, with various interests and experiences. Oxford wouldn’t be Oxford without the world shrinking every day.  I love music: whether writing, playing, or listening to it. I also enjoy sport; it keeps me sane. I participate in my college’s football, rowing, and basketball clubs, with the occasional run here and there. The rest of my free time is spent enjoying the vibrant social life at my college. Every day promises an interesting talk, an insightful workshop, or an unforgettable event.
