Bastian’s research focuses on education and labour market policy and its implications for social inequality from a life-course and intergenerational perspective. His doctoral dissertation examines the effect of institutional and structural changes on the social mobility chances of disadvantaged youth in Germany, using quasi-experimental designs and regression techniques. As part of his dissertation project he constructed a unique data set by harmonising and combining three large German population surveys. This research is funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Bastian is completing his doctoral dissertation in August 2017.
Alongside his dissertation research, Bastian is working on a research project examining the role of parental attributes and children’s cognitive ability in intergenerational social mobility in Britain, led by Erzsébet Bukodi and John Goldthorpe, and funded by the Nuffield Foundation. A third research project investigates the causes and consequences of youth unemployment in Europe, funded by European Commission.
Bastian designed and is co-teaching a masters-level course on ‘Social Policy in the 21st Century’ at the Blavatnik School of Government (BSG). Before coming to Oxford Bastian studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and worked for the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Bangkok, Thailand.
