Facilities and Libraries
The department is housed in Barnett House, in Wellington Square. Barnett House includes lecture and seminar rooms, facilities for students, a Common Room for use by all members of the department, and staff offices. Teaching takes place both in the department and in the Manor Road Social Sciences Building (where there are computer labs available for practical work).
The Common Room provides an informal environment where you can meet, network and socialise with staff and other students. There are various social events that take place throughout the year, again offering a chance to network with your peers and with academic colleagues.
There is a Masters students room available as a workspace, inclduing computing and printing faciltiies. There are offices set aside for the use of DPhil students.
There is no library within the department itself. However, students in Oxford have access to the world famous Bodleian Libraries, which house over 11 million printed items as well as providing access to 50,000 e-journals and a variety of material in other formats.
The main part of the Bodleian Libraries that you will use is the Social Science Library, is located on the ground floor of the Manor Road Social Science Building. The Social Science Library has books for loan on Sociology, Social Psychology, Politics, Development Studies and International Relations as well as social policy and social intervention. It also offers many research collections including over 500 current social science journals.
Study spaces are also available, including group discussion rooms, individual study carrels and graduate study rooms.
