Alexa Yakubovich

Alexa Yakubovich is a Rhodes Scholar and CIHR-funded researcher who completed her DPhil in Social Intervention (2019). She previously earned a MSc in Evidence-Based Social Intervention (with Distinction) at Oxford and a BA (Honours) in Psychology (University Gold Medalist) at the University of Manitoba.

Alexa's research program is focused on conducting rigorous investigations of the structural determinants of interpersonal violence and health inequities and using this understanding to implement and evaluate programs and policies meant to address these outcomes. In her doctorate, Alexa investigated whether and how community and structural disadvantages increase the risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. To carry out this work, she conducted a global systematic review of the risk and protective factors for IPV and conducted a multi-disciplinary series of analyses of quantitative data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, including the first investigation of the effect of long-term exposure to neighbourhood deprivation on the risk of experiencing IPV among women. She received the Department's 2019 Barnett Prize for her research.

Alexa is currently a CIHR Health System Impact Postdoctoral Fellow and CIHR-CMHC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre for Urban Health Solutions at Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto. She works with a diverse team of academic, practice, and community partners on quantitative epidemiologic and mixed-methods research to inform prevention and response strategies to intimate partner violence. In addition, Alexa continues her collaboration with the Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention on the Stand Your Ground project.
