Ismael’s research projects aim to understand the causes and consequences of educational inequality, with particular focus on how inequities in educational attainment and family dynamics influence health outcomes over the life course. For this purpose, he employs a wide range of methodological designs, including demographic and quasi-experimental techniques applied to cross-national and close case studies.
Ismael’s current research examines the intergenerational relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren health and cognitive outcomes, as well as the role of demographic and health regimes in shaping this relationship. He is also studying the dynamic influences of education on various health outcomes and how this link evolves across cohorts. His work in these areas has been published in Demography, Population and Development Review, Social Science and Medicine: Mental Health, International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, and other academic journals and books.
Prior to this role, Ismael was a post-doctoral researcher on the ERC-Echo Project at the Institute of Economy, Geography, and Demography at the Spanish National Research council (CSIC), and is currently an international affiliated member of the Population and Society Studies Group (GEPS-CSIC).
Ismael holds a PhD in Educational Theory and Policy and Comparative and International Education with a minor in Demography from the Pennsylvania State University. He previously received his Master’s Degree in International and Development Economics from the Economics School of Louvain and a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
