Eriko Yamakuma

As an international student from Japan, I graduated UC Berkeley with Sociology degree and was awarded high distinction.

During my time at Berkeley, I was a student journalist reporting for college newspaper the Daily Californian and I also interned with the Japan Times, national news division during the pandemic.

I was a research assistant for Professor Jerome Karabel on Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program, examining the shift of ideological leaning of Republican Party over the years and racial boundary in American context.

I was awarded a full scholarship from Yanai Tadashi Foundation to study at Berkeley, and am currently a recipient of Oxford-Uehiro Graduate Scholarship for my study at Oxford. My interest lies in intersection of inequality, gender and labour market/employment, currently studying viable policy solutions for in-work poverty of single mothers.

I am looking at the policy solutions for in-work poverty of single mothers in OECD countries, specifically looking at indirect measures on work-life balance and employment quality.
