Janina Steinert

Janina Steinert is a DPhil candidate in Social Intervention and a recipient of the ESRC Advanced Quantitative Methods Scholarship. Janina holds an MSc in Evidence-based Social Intervention and was awarded the Teresa Smith Prize by the Department for the best thesis in the year 2013/14. Janina further holds a BA in Political Sciences and International Relations from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and has visited the Université Paris-Sorbonne for an Erasmus-sponsored exchange semester. Janina has worked in South Africa as a Project Manager for the Sinovuyo Teen Study - a Randomised Controlled Trial that was run in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Health Organisation. Janina has further worked as a short-term consultant for Save the Children, the International AIDS Alliance, the World Health Organisation, the SEEP Network, and the Oxford Microfinance Initiative and has had placements in the United Nations Liaison Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in New York City and at the Peace Research Institute in Frankfurt.

Janina's research interest lies primarily in the field of development economics, but also draws on aspects of public health and peace and conflict research. In her DPhil work, she aims to assess the impact of economic strengthening programmes and develop policy recommendations for alleviating family financial distress and household poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa.
